Deforestation in the Amazon is speeding up. Lots of people believe illegal loggers and miners are still operating in the area. In April this year, deforestation in the Brazilian rainforest increased by 64%. Just in the first trimester of 2020, there was a more than 50% increase in deforestation compared to last year. There are few but some indigenous communities living in the Amazon. Activists worry that if there is increasing commercial activities in the Amazon that outsiders can carry diseases into those communities. Environmental groups believe the only way to help the indigenous people is to keep illegal loggers and miners out of their territory.
